Usually, before I travel to some far-off place, I do a great amount of preparation: I read about my destination on the internet, I found out what museums are open when, I read fiction by authors from the place. This time, however, I restrained myself; I read only the autobiography of Nelson Mandela before my departure. I did see this book (above) at Schiphol airport on the way to Cape Town, but I waited until I had found it in a South African bookstore to buy it. I am currently reading not only about the troubled history of South Africa, but of the entire continent as well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a great introduction to the complex political struggles that are happenening today.
More later.
